Vinnies’ Migrant and Refugee Program
Vinnies’ Migrant and Refugee Program aims to support children from a migrant or refugee background to feel connected, safe, valued and empowered. We do this by being strength based, trauma informed and relationship focused. We currently offer three programs.
1) School Based Programs
Volunteers work 1:1 with primary and secondary students to support them with their learning on a weekly basis at the following schools:
Florey PS
Franklin PS
Dickson College SIEC
Charnwood-Dunlop IEC
St Joseph’s Primary O’Connor
North Ainslie IEC
*SIEC = Secondary Intensive English Centre
**IEC = Intensive English Centre
2) Gungahlin Library Do Nut Stress Homework Club
In collaboration with Libraries ACT, we run the DoNut Stress Homework Club at Gungahlin Library on Saturdays 1.30-3.30pm during school terms. Primary and secondary aged students from a multicultural background can drop in with their homework and our friendly volunteers will help them with their homework.
3) School Holiday Programs
In collaboration with Red Cross Humanitarian Support Program, Multicultural Hub and Libraries ACT, we run regular art school holiday activities for children from a migrant or refugee background. These programs are for children whose parents are clients of Red Cross HSP, Multicultural Hub, MARSS and any other service that support families from a migrant or refugee background.
